Arts centre appeals for support
The Witham in Barnard Castle needs £30,000
A community run arts centre in Barnard Castle is appealing to the public to help it survive.
The Witham in Barnard Castle needs to raise £30,000 in 30 days to help secure its long-term future.
The overall target of the appeal is to secure £150,000 before the end of the year.
The move follows the failure of the centre to secure a £200,000 grant from the Arts Council which would have made the centre sustainable until at least 2022.
The Witham is housed in a Victorian dispensary originally set up by public appeal back in 1846.
Its most recent refurbishment was in 2013 and since then, The Witham has built an increasingly strong reputation for performances and visual arts.
Jill Cole, director of Northern Heartlands and member of The Witham board of trustees said: “The Witham is a vital facility for the small market town of Barnard Castle and its rural hinterland. It attracts people and draws them into town.”
