Meet the first ever Pet Poet Laureate
Blue Cross, the pet charity, has appointed Russell Jones as the first ever Pet Poet Laureate.
Jones was picked from a shortlist of 20 emerging poets in a national competition judged by the Poetry Society. Based in Edinburgh, has published two adult novels as well as writing short stories for Disney Animalsmagazine and publishing three volumes of poetry.
The appointment is for a year during which he will write a series of poems about pets, their influence and their impact on people’s lives. The winning piece was A Tempest, based on the struggles of an abandoned cat and her homeless kittens. Themes throughout the year will include a pet’s impact on child development and the role pets played in the First World War.
