Bush’s Younis takes over at Southbank
Madfani Younis has been appointed to the new role of creative director at the Southbank Centre.
He has been artistic director of the Bush Theatre for six years where he led the biggest capital project in the theatre’s history, and joins the SBC in January.
“It's my priority to ensure we bring world class arts and performances to all audiences and I know that Madani will bring a new energy and vision to our site and iconic venues” said the centre’s CEO, Elaine Bedell, in announcing the appointment today. “We want to provide bold, diverse and ambitious artistic programming here and Madani’s arrival signals that we are entering an exciting new era.”
Madani will work alongside music director Gillian Moore and Hayward Gallery director Ralph Rugoff, but the centre stressed he is not replacing Jude Kelly, who left as artistic director in May.
The appointment signals an increasing emphasis on diversity on the centre’s programming, established by Kelly and a hallmark of Madani’s work at the Bush and before that at Freedom Studios, Bradford, the Red Ladder Asian Theatre School.
