Arts centre opens in Edinburgh observatory
A new contemporary arts centre, Collective, opens tomorrow, November 24, in one of Edinburgh’s most recognisable historic buildings.
The City Observatory on top of Calton Hill was designed by William Playfair in 1818 has now been restored to Playfair’s original designs at a cost of £4.5m. It opens to the public for the first time in its 200 year history, with the 1831 telescope on display.
Collective now incorporates contemporary art exhibitions - the first, Affinity and Allusion, being a selection of commissioned work on the theme of Calton Hill’s history – a restaurant and shop.
