LPO to be school’s resident band
The London Philharmonic Orchestra is to be the resident ensemble for an Essex comprehensive school.
The LPO, also resident at the Southbank Centre and Glyndebourne, is to make Saffron Hall at Saffron Walden County High School in Essex, an international standard music venue that doubles as the school hall, its home for the 2019-20 concert season, joining the Britten Sinfonia, resident since 2016-17.

With its residency will come the orchestra’s principal conductor, Vladimir Jurowski, and music advisors Marin Alsop and Sir Antony Pappano.
“The London Philharmonic Orchestra and Vladimir Jurowski performed the very first concert of my first ever season at Saffron Hall, and it remains one of the highlights of my time here” said Saffron Hall's CEO Angela Dixon. “I am absolutely delighted that we are formalising the excellent relationship that exists between the LPO, Saffron Hall and our audience by announcing this residency alongside the excellent programme already offered by Britten Sinfonia.”
And Timothy Walker, chief executive and artistic director of the LPO, added: “We are greatly looking forward to not only bringing more top-level artists and music making to the region, but to working with Angela Dixon and the team to fully involves ourselves in the visionary schools and communities programme there. We are delighted to have this opportunity to share our work with audiences in the East of England regularly for the first time”.
The award-winning Saffron Hall is a 740-seat venue which opened at the school in 2013 and has attracted international artists and ensembles to make it major cultural hub in the east of England.
