A £19m Shakespeare playhouse for Merseyside has been given planning permission and should become operational in 2019.

To be called the playhouse, the 350-seat theatre will be built near the site of oa 16th century theatre and, says the Shakespeare North Trust, will "reflect a triangulation" with Shakespeare Globe at Bankside in London and the Royal Shakespeare Company at Stratford-upon-Avon. Education is to be at its core.

The project for Prescot on Merseyside already has full funding, including £5m announced by  the Chancellor of the Exchequer in last month's Budget and £6m from Knowsley Council.
