Hudson takes over in Manchester

Alistair Hudson, director of Mima in Middlesbrough, is to succeed Maria Balshaw as head of both the Whitworth Gallery and Manchester Art Gallery, following her move to become director of Tate.

A joint appointment cy the city council and Manchester University, the job is key to the cultural development in the city seen as a key to its future prosperity.

At Mima, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art - over the last three years Hudson has created new connections with local communities through the concept of “The Useful Museum”, and the town’s university to rationalise its funding and link with younger generations. Previously he was deputy director of Grizedale Arts.

The Whitworth re-opened in 2015 after a £17m refurbishment and went on to win the Art Fund Museum of the Year award that year.
