Levete shortlisted to design Rattle Hall
Amanda Levete, Norman Foster and Renzo Piano are among the six architectural practices shortlisted to design London's new Centre for Music.
Levete, who designed the V&A’s new Exhibition Road Quarter, has partnered with the Canadian Diamond Schmitt, Architects to make her application, and Gehry have combined with Arup cor theirs. Others nm the shortlist are Diller Scofidio + Renfro with Shepard Robson and Snohetta of Norway.
The Centre for Music is planned to contain a world-class concert hall, education, training and digital spaces, high grade facilities for audiences and performers, and supporting commercial areas. It will be administered jointly by the Barbican Centre, the London Symphony Orchestra and the Guoildhall School of Music and Drama, and was proposed after Sir Simon Rattle, before being named the next music director of the LSO, had voiced his condemnation of London’s lack of a world standard concert hall.
The centre is supported by the Corporation of London with a £2.5m grant to make the business case after the government withdrew its promised grant last year. It will be built on the site of the Museum of London, which is moving to Smithfield.
