Eastbourne gallery to be its own canvas
Eastbourne’s Towner Art Gallery is calling for artists and designers to bring their ideas for a mural to decorate its exterior.
The Brewers Towner Commission is to be part of the year long celebration marking ten years since the Towner moved from its original home in Eastbourne Old Town.
The commission is looking for a work that will cover the whole Rick Mather-designed building drawing on the spirit of Towner and its location.
Set back from Eastbourne’s Victorian seafront at the entrance to the South Downs National Park, the gallery was founded in 1923 as an art gallery for the people of Eastbourne, and the Towner has been collecting and exhibiting contemporary art for almost a century. Today, the gallery welcomes 150,000 visitors a year with modern and contemporary art shown alongside the Towner ‘s own collection.
Submissions can be made until December 30 at towner.gallery/OpenCall, and the winner will be announced in February 2019. Their proposal will be realised by a team of experienced scenic artists during next spring of 2019, with an official launch in May 2019.
