V&A’s Dundee effect is working

Figures show major boost for culture venues

Figures show that the the opening of the V&A in Dundee has already boosted other attractions in the city.

The Association of Scottish Visitor Attractions (ASVA) showed visits to tourist destinations such as Discovery Point, which focuses on Captain’s Scott’s first Antarctic voyage, increased by 42% in 2018. Arts centre Verdant Works saw a 21% year-on-year increase to 19,993 visitors and nearby Arbroath Abbey saw 17,060 people last year, compared with 14,414 in 2017.

The V&A in Dundee has had more than 450,000 visitors in the six months since it opened. Compared to a target of 500,000 in its first year.

Director Philip Long said: “We are delighted to see a boost in visitors to some of the excellent attractions in Dundee and Tayside just a few months after we opened. V&A Dundee has always been a partnership project, with one of its aims being to help accelerate the regeneration of Dundee.”

However in Scotland as a whole, Scottish tourist attractions posted only a modest increase in visitor numbers of 0.1% compared to a 9.7% rise on 2016 and a 6% increase in 2015.
