Sherborne local charity funds £6m art gallery

The Dorset town of Sherborne is to get its own international contemporary art gallery in 2022, thanks to the local Cannon Foundation.

The Paddock, designed by the Exeter-based practice LHC Design, will cost £6m, and the funder will also pay for the gallery’s first year of operation.

“The Paddock Project is a once in a lifetime opportunity for Sherborne, made possible through a visionary philanthropic act” said the Paddock Project’s director, Emma Morris, who joined from Eastbourne’s Towner Gallery.  “Since moving to Dorset a year ago I have been struck by the hunger for this project to succeed, from artists, businesses, schools and the wider community.

“As well as presenting a dynamic programme of contemporary visual art, craft and design for everyone to enjoy, I want the gallery to be the social hub of the town; a place to meet, to be inspired, to learn, participate and be creative” she said.

The 1700 sq m space - on land formerly used as tennis courts and given Dorset County Council - will have two galleries, a 120-seat cinema/performance auditorium, two studios for hosting events and activities, and a café / restaurant, shop and garden.
