Annilese Miskimmon to be ENO’s next artistic director

The Ulster-born director of Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, Annilese Miskimmon, is to be English National Opera’s next artistic director.

She replaces Daniel Kramer who left in July, and though she will not take up her post officially until next September she will have input into season planning from January.

“I can’t wait to join the world-class artistic, music and technical teams at ENO” she said. “It has been a great privilege and pleasure to lead Norway’s national opera company over these past 3 years and an equal joy to now join ENO."

Born in Bangor, Miskimmon, 45, was head of Danish National Opera for five years until 2012, and before that was artistic director of Opera Theatre Company Ireland. She was educated at Cambridge and City University.

She becomes only the third ENO artistic director, after John Berry and Kramer, and will be the only woman artistic director of an opera company in the UK.

“It has been a diligent, long and thorough process to appoint a new artistic director with every member of the ENO board playing their part” said ENO’s chair, Harry Brunjes. “We were really impressed by Annilese who brings with her significant experience of working as a director and developing an artistic programme. Her creative ideas and knowledge of the opera and arts landscape will be invaluable.”
