Coventry picks a Mayday start to its year of culture

Coventry announced today that it will start its year as the UK City of Culture on May 1 next year.

The Coventry City of Culture Trust also announced today that there was to be a “signature event”, a city-wide celebration involving thousands of residents whose music, performance and dance will weave through hundreds of structures built by residents across the city.

Martin Sutherland, chief executive of Coventry 2021, said the year, running for 365 days to May 2022, was being co-created with national and local partners, and grassroots organisations across the city including at least 120 community-led or charitable organisations, and the programme will include international artistic events, world premieres and commissions across theatre, music, dance, literature, comedy and visual art.

“Coventry has always moved, to respond to circumstance, to innovate and reimagine the way things can be done for the better” he said. “As the sector and the city continues to map its road to recovery we hope that today’s announcement can provide a bedrock on which many other positive decisions can be made. Change can come when we invest in culture. Today’s announcement reaffirms our commitment to delivering a year with impact, but it will also be a chance to celebrate for the city and the UK at a time when it has never been more important to do so.”

The creative director for Coventry 2021 is Chenine Bhathena. “Coventry 2021 is about the people of Coventry and their stories” she said. “We will reflect and address the issues that matter to all of us. At this time of uncertainty our determination to create connections, memories and commit to making a change is unwavering and we are determined to create an amazing year. With support and resources the cultural community can play a significant role in the reset of the UK and we plan to shine a spotlight on culture’s important role in this recovery.”
