Carphone Warehouse founder to chair Royal Opera House

David Ross, co-founder of the Carphone Warehouse high street franchise, is to be the next chair of the Royal Opera House. He succeeds Ian Taylor who died in June.

Ross, 55, has a long record in arts philanthropy, with a particular commitment to diversity. When he was chair of the National Portrait Gallery he established new education programmes. He also hosts the Nevill Holt Opera festival which he founded at his Leicestershire home, Nevill Holt Hall.

“I am passionate about creating opportunities for all and ensuring that everyone can enjoy our great cultural institutions, artists and musicians” Ross said. “In particular I want to focus on building upon the great education programmes that have been put in place to bring the arts to children across the country.”
