Flagging up Coal Drops Yard

Coal Drops Yard, the King’s Cross shopping complex designed by Thomas Heatherwick and opened in 2018, was flagged up today as a fashion icon.

All Our Stories is a flag art installation by fashion designer Bethany Williams (pictured in Coal Drops Yard) and is a prelude to London Fashion Week in September .

It is made up of 90 flags of all colours, stretching been the roofs of the yard each carrying a vibrantly-hued illustration and will be on display for shoppers until September 5. It will then be turned into a fashion collection to be sold in Coal Drops Yard outlets.

The installation, Williams said, is based on a collection of illustrated, intergenerational stories inspired by collaborative storytelling workshops that she conducted with the families from the East London grassroots organisation, The Magpie Project, a charity that supports women and children who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, and London College of Fashion’s Making for Change, a fashion training and manufacturing programme established at HMP Downview in 2014 and now also based at Poplar Works. Williams collaborated with the artist Melissa Kitty Jarram to transform the stories into illustrations which in turn have become flags. “It's such a joy to be able to celebrate all the beautiful communities’ stories in a public space” Williams said

It is the second summer flag art installation for the site, launched last year by the installation artist Lauren Godfrey. The flags are made from recyclable organic hemp, the material used in traditional flag-making.
