Theatre audiences can unmask

The return to Plan A Covid measures from Plan B has been cautiously welcomed in English theatres.

From January 27 audiences will no longer be required to wear masks at performances, but theatres are expected to continue to recommend that customers cover up.

Julian Bird, CEO of Theatre UK and the Society of London Theatre, said the announcement yesterday was a confidence boost for theatres after weeks of turbulence and uncertainty but they would continue to be urge caution.

“Throughout the pandemic, theatres UK-wide have worked tirelessly to offer world-class entertainment and audiences can be assured that venues using the See it Safely mark, developed by SOLT & UK Theatre, are operating in accordance with the latest government guidelines” he said. “As restrictions ease, we continue to ask theatregoers to wear face coverings throughout our buildings unless exempt, to protect our hardworking staff, performers and fellow audience members.”
