Cartmell heads for Royal Exchange

Selina Cartmell is to be the first creative director of the Royal Exchange, Manchester, taking up the post in August.

The award-winning director and producer was artistic director of the Gate, Dublin, from 2016 to 2022, commissioning seasons from both Irish and international talent, as well as growing new and diverse audiences. At the Exchange she will work to CEO Steve Freeman with her first programmed season in 2026, the theatre’s  50th anniversary year.

“My ambition for the Royal Exchange Theatre is for it to be an inclusive home that attracts the best of emerging and established talent to connect and inspire audiences and communities - old and new - and to share these stories with the world” said Cartmell, pictured here by Agata Stoinska. “What we commission and create needs to be visionary, progressive and relevant and reflect the world we live in. We need to be global in outlook and fiercely independent, distinctive and deeply local in output.”
