Science Museum ends BP sponsorship

The Science Museum has ended its controversial 25-year partnership with BP after its relationship had “drawn to a close” at the end of August.

No reason has been given for the end of the support but the museum has been subjected to multiple demonstrations by environmental groups protesting at the association with a fossil-fuel concern.

Among the exhibitions BP sponsored was the 2016 show Cosmonauts: Birth of the Space Age (pictured) which explored Russian space travel.

The museum has been under pressure to move away from oil and gas sponsorship, and in 2024 dropped the Norwegian oil company Equinor as a partner because of its failure to lower carbon emissions enough to come into line with the Paris climate agreement target to limit global heating to 1.5 degrees by 2030.

Elsewhere, the National Portrait Gallery discontinued its relationship with BP in 2024, and in 2025 the British Museum signed a £50m deal with BP which would include an energy centre programme to phase out the use of fossil fuels at the museum.
