Great Exhibition appoints Bell
NGI culture boss takes over 2018 Northern extravaganza.
Carol Bell has been chosen to take charge of the Great Exhibition of the North, the major celebration art, culture, design and innovation in the North of England.
Bell takes up the role of executive director, building on her extensive experience and as director of culture and major events at the NewcastleGateshead Initiative. She will oversee all areas of activity, including the creative direction, content, fundraising and stakeholder management.
She will be joined by Maria Bota as creative producer and BALTIC’s director Sarah Munro as creative spokesperson. Bota, an experienced culture professional who has delivered major events such as the Salisbury International Festival and Milton Keynes International, has been recruited to lead the creative content development. Munro had an eminent career in Glasgow as both artistic director of Tramway and head of arts for the city prior to taking over the Gateshead-based gallery.
The core creative team also includes key personnel from delivery partners Iain Watson from Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums, the Great North Museum, Abigail Pogson, director of Sage Gateshead and Newcastle University’s Professor Roy Sandbach.

Now our focus is on commissioning and curating exciting work to build an unparalleled programme of activity.”
The Great Exhibition of the North will take place across NewcastleGateshead from June until September 2018.
